Dear Student, I’ve been doing animal communication professionally for over 12 years now. Before I learned how to communicate, I remember crying because I so desperately wanted that special telepathic connection with animals. Not only did I want this for my own animals, I was working as a zoo supervisor at the time and I wanted it for the zoo animals. When I started to learn to speak to animals, I had no idea how this would evolve for me. I just knew I had to do it. There are things I wished I would have known from the get-go that would have guided me. I’d like to share those things with you, in hopes that they will help you, even if you are not a newbie. 1. Trying to learn from a book or written instruction is extremely difficult. I first started with an animal communication book and soon realized while it was a great book, it was not going to help me believe in myself. There was too much opportunity for doubt and fear to set in. I realized I needed an actual teacher to guide me in this new and amazing process. 2. Every teacher is different and you can learn something new each time. In my pursuit of these abilities, I ended up studying with four different teachers. Three were professional animal communicators and one was a Tibetan shaman. At the first class I took, I realized while I got pretty good results, a lot of the class did not. This was a quick 3-hour workshop with over 20 students, so I figured there must be other ways out there to learn more thoroughly. The second and third workshops were 2-day workshops with around 9-12 students. I realized the more students a teacher takes on, the more class time is needed to teach them. The fourth workshop was another 3-hour workshop that did not really work for me other than I learned a new skill. All the teachers were unique and, I felt, great in their own way. So I came to realize that it was ok to keep learning from new teachers in order to hone my skills. And ultimately, these experiences helped me to design my own workshops that I felt would provide the best opportunity for learning which included a smaller class size in a one day format. 3. Experiment with staying grounded. I had learned reiki before I learned to communicate with animals. Someone had told me that energy work was like a doorway to animal communication. While this was great, I realized when I talked to animals, I needed to make sure I was always grounded. This is something probably all teachers tell you is an important step for communication. For me, this meant sitting on my couch and putting my feet flat on the carpet floor. I probably did this for several months and was afraid to try anything else for fear I’d break the ‘magic’ connection. After all, in all of the classes I had taken, I sat in a chair or on a couch with my feet flat on the ground. I finally started to try other things. I would go into my bathtub, get the water level just right, turn it off and speak to the animals. Success! You’ve probably heard water is a great conductor of energy, and communicating is no exception. My next step was to try my bed — with my feet off the ground! I set my intention. Yes, that worked, too! So I realized it was ok to try different methods of grounding. 4. Practice, practice, practice. To my knowledge, none of my teachers offered a practice group. I didn’t even realize this opportunity existed from other teachers or sources. I had to create my own practice sessions. I contacted family, friends and co-workers and asked if anyone had animals they wanted me to speak to. Fortunately, many were quite excited. I was speaking with multiple animals a week. Had I known to seek a practice group, animals would have been readily available without all the effort I had to put in. And I do feel it is better if you speak to animals that are cared for by people you do not really know, so a practice group is ideal. But the more I practiced, the more my skills increased. I went from getting words to getting sentences to getting paragraphs. I went from getting basic information to more detailed information. In time, the animals were providing spiritual guidance. Energies have changed so much that these days, even new students can get great details, including guidance. But I realized I got what I was ready to get at the time. I shouldn’t compare my ability to anyone else’s. I learned to just go with the flow, let be and allow. 5. Believe in yourself. I remember seeing a praying mantis outside my house and thinking I should try to talk to it. I was used to speaking with domestic and farm animals and branching out was important. I knew if I spoke to wild animals, I wouldn’t necessarily know what they might tell me. It would be a unique experience. I asked the mantis how it got on the porch rail. It told me it flew there. I thought ‘they don’t fly.’ Let me look that up on the internet. Well, sure enough they do. I then asked what it ate and it told me other insects. I thought that wasn’t true either as I believed them to be vegetarians. The internet revealed the truth. Apparently, I was getting them confused with grasshoppers. I did end up frustrating this lovely praying mantis because I kept doubting my conversation with it. I had to apologize. I realized that it was important to believe what I got from the animals. Even if it didn’t make sense at the moment, I received the information I got for a reason. The last thing I wanted to do was doubt what I got because that meant I was doubting the animal. I did not want to hurt the animal’s feelings. 6. Let loose and hang with the animals. I truly love all kinds of animals. I was blessed to work with birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. I supervised the zoo’s bug house. I was in heaven in the bat cave. I didn’t realize how much I would fall in love with those creatures from all over the world. Most people have animals of their own, but there are animals everywhere. I remember these amazing flower beetles that featured blue, green and maroon iridescent colors. They were fairly new and I decided to speak with them. They were down on the bottom of the enclosure. As soon as I did, they started climbing up the side of the enclosure and branches to see me. They were surprised someone actually wanted to speak to them and cared about them. We were in awe of each other. I remember the first time I saw a wolf in the wild. We were coming back to our cabin in the Tetons in Wyoming. It was evening but still some light and not another soul on the two-lane road. Before I ever left on the trip, I had asked a wolf to come forward to meet me. I couldn’t believe my eyes! There before us, a wolf darted across the road in front of our vehicle. My husband pulled over and we got out. He had the camera. I had the video camera. There was so much brush I wondered where he could be. We scanned the horizon and stood for several minutes. I decided to close my eyes and ask the wolf to come out. I said I just want to be graced by your presence and we will not harm you. Immediately, the wolf stepped out from behind a bush. He turned his head and looked right at me. Our eyes caught and we stood connected in that magical moment. You can hear me on the video telling him, oh thank you, thank you, thank you. He then walked off, unafraid. I will forever treasure that moment. These experiences taught me to appreciate animals at all opportunities in my life. Embrace all creatures. Enjoy all of nature that Mother Earth has to offer. Yes, they have taught me that you can have fun communicating even when you least expect it. You don’t need to be in your ’magical’ place to make the magic happen. For there is magic everywhere. 7. Animals will give their life in order to give you a message. This was a hard lesson for me to learn but a valuable one. I was always fascinated by angels and decided to take a class to learn about them. In this class, students spoke to the angels. I wrote down in class what I got from the angels, just like I would when speaking to an animal. Driving home on the freeway, I questioned had I really spoken to angels. Was this real? Was it like speaking to animals? Well, all of a sudden, a mourning dove flew into the windshield of my car, right in alignment with my face. I saw it so clearly, looking at me. I remember its eyes. It was as if it was in slow motion. You see, doves are special to me on a spiritual level. I had owned white doves for years. Talking to animals is spiritual in nature. I knew immediately this dove had given its life in order to show me that what I had gotten from the angels was indeed real. As tears streamed down my face and I thanked the dove for the sacrifice it had made, I vowed then and there to never, ever, doubt my abilities again. Recalling this memory brings tears to my eyes. So if animal hits your vehicle, honor them. Think about what was on your mind right before this happened. Is the message clear? If not, you can speak to that animal or at least look up the animal totem such as dove animal totem. This is just one way animals bring messages to us. They are constantly trying to get our attention and support us on our journey. I hope this information will help you or provide inspiration in some small way. Remember, the animals believe in you. Always have, always will. Communication Blessings! Kim Shotola The Lightfoot Way Kim and Allison of The Lightfoot Way have taught hundreds of students from all over the world how to communicate with animals in their ONE day teleclass.
